` Wheelock Music Works

Red Bullet GUITAR INSTRUCTION

Wheelock Music Works is devoted to the study of voice, fiddle, mandolin, & guitar in the context of acoustic styles of Old-Time, Bluegrass, Folk, Swing, & Jazz.

Following are sequential learning modes for practicing standard notation sight reading skills - practice each mode as a separate step and combine them in the end to complete the learning exercise for the tune. Important strategies - Be patient and practice only as much as remains fun and enjoyable. Understand that these skills take time to acquire.
• Identify the key & time signatures;
• Play the associated .mp3 sound clip to ear-train the tune into memory;
• Identify each note, e.g., C, E#, B♭ - write down on score as necessary;
• Identify each chord change - write down on score as necessary;
• Locate and play the note(s) on the guitar & vocalize them on pitch;
• Count out timing/rhythm according to the note values, e.g., dotted 1/8th note;
• Advanced: Identify the tonic note and call out notes by their scale degrees.
